Abstract

Introduction: The transmission of hepatitis C during hemodialysis is mainly nosocomial. Among the patients who undergo this procedure and the surfaces contaminated with the hepatitis C virus, there are the personnel who work in direct contact with them.

Objective: Develop an instrument to evaluate the competence that patient care personnel undergoing hemodialysis treatment must have to reduce the transmission of hepatitis C.

Methods: Development research where a methodological strategy was developed to evaluate professional competencies in nursing staff. A methodological design was carried out by the expert method with the Delphi technique.

Results: Professional competencies were defined, performance criteria that normalize these competencies were established, and finally, a questionnaire and an observation guide were developed to determine the level of competency of this staff.

Conclusions: The development of the instrument to measure the competence of nursing staff to reduce the transmission of hepatitis C in hemodialysis followed a rigorous development scheme using group discussion techniques and statistical methods that supported its internal consistency, reliability and validity. This will allow us to determine the role of these personnel in the transmission of hepatitis C in the hemodialysis unit.
