Abstract

Introduction: Peritoneal dialysis is an excellent option to start treatment in patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease. Peritonitis is its main complication despite the technical advances that have taken place in recent decades.

Objective: carry out a synthesis and update of the topic under study.

Methods: a bibliographic review was carried out during the year 2022 in the PubMed-MEDLINE, Scielo, LILACS and Google Scholar databases of articles related to the topic.

Results: peritonitis associated with peritoneal dialysis continues to be the main complication in this type of therapy, 60% are due to gram-positive bacteria. Knowledge of the most common etiological agents and the antimicrobial susceptibility patterns recommended for treatment in each care center contributes to the success of empirical antimicrobial therapy.

Conclusions: knowledge of the clinical and microbiological characteristics of peritonitis in peritoneal dialysis implies a better prognosis, both in survival and in permanence in the technique as a replacement method for renal function.
