Abstract

Introduction: there is no evidence of kidney damage in pediatric patients convalescent from COVID-19 in the Cuban context.

Objective: to describe the presence of markers of kidney damage in pediatric patients convalescent from COVID-19.

Methods: an observational, descriptive, longitudinal and prospective study was carried out on 64 convalescent patients from COVID-19, treated at the "Dr. Luis Díaz Soto" Hospital, in the period June to July 2021. The variables to be analyzed were identified in a follow-up in two stages: upon admission and six months after hospital discharge. Measurements of markers of acute kidney injury and estimation of acute kidney injury were performed according to the 2012 KDIGO guidelines. Descriptive statisticians were used.

Results: patients aged 10 to 18 years (51.5%), female (55.9%) and white skin color (62.5%) predominated. The asymptomatic state prevailed (67.2%). The most frequent markers of kidney damage were elevated cystatin C at admission (37%), elevated creatinine (24%), and at six months of follow-up they had this marker (23.4%). Acute kidney injury was identified in three patients. Patients with normal kidney function without markers of kidney damage at admission or at six months stood out (53.1%).

Conclusions: only in a minority of patients was acute kidney injury evident. Heterogeneous manifestations were presented in the evolution of renal function and renal markers in the sample.
